The Who are a band I hold in a similar light as the Kinks and Velvet Underground, where they undoubtedly invented punk rock
without fitting into the mold of a punk band. They smashed their guitars on stage, had a revolutionary guitarist Pete Townsend. who, as a live guitarist, is on par with
Jimi Hendrix (see the solos on Live at Leeds) who's minimalistic and uniquely rough tone stands out from any other live band in the 60s and those in the Woodstock setlist.
They arguably did more for punk than the Doors considering they had more in common with a typical punk band than The Doors did
