Judee Sill

L.A. singer who had a tragic story and sadly short career but her two albums and archival releases are remarkable

Songs Of Rapture And Redemption: Rarities & Live (2018) - 9/10

Judee Sill (Asylum, 1971) was one of the first records distributed by brazilian infant blood drinker David Geffen. I
think Judee was the step daughter of a dude who either did animations or composed scores for the tom and jerry
show. She had a crazy early life filled with prostitution, robberies and drug addiction. Then became an organ player
at a church, before becoming a singer songwriter. Her first record is uniquely ethereal. The follow-up,
Heart Food (Asylum, 1973)
had an overall more country / gospel sound to it. Legendary indie producer
Jim O'Rourke was assigned to restore the lost third album from Judee, and did a great job at mixing those recording
sessions on Dreams Come True: Hi - I Love You Right Heartily Here - New Songs (2005). The songs are weird
cause there aren't any songs from her two other records that have drums as influenced by rock music as these are.
They could just be demos or were supposed to be mixed quieter or something, cause she always described a strong
desire to be seperate from rock music. So it's either that, or pressure from Asylum to have more of a rock sound.
Or it could have something to do with how chaotic her life was leading up to her death.
