Black Flag started out in the 70s doing ordinary punk rock but eventually got a lot more aggressive
both musically and in their performances, creating the rowdy culture punk is known for. Their concerts
were a place for young people to be violent, mosh and get in fights. Looking back on their album Damaged (1981),
it isn't the best punk ever made, but definitely a little more interesting than other big punk bands at the time.
My War (1984) is not only a punk rock classic, but groundbreaking for the genres grunge and sludge metal,
inspiring countless great bands like Big Black and Melvins. Family Man (1984) was a precursor for
the singer Henry Rollins' spoken word career. The album is so
pretentious to the point of being occasionally entertaining. Rollins went on to start Fugazi, who are way more interesting.
